Hello, I’m Jacinta. Welcome to Mother Zen.
I’m a mother of two beautiful boys.
In my other life, I’m a News Presenter (Sky News), columnist (Sunday Life Magazine) journalist and author.
My third book, Mother Zen, described as part memoir, part ‘manifesto of modern motherhood’, chronicles my attempts to be more present and connected as a mother, and what I’m learning along the way. You can order a copy here.
I’m also what they call a ‘social commentator’, popping up occasionally on TV shows like Today Show, Sunrise and The Morning Show to talk about everything from relationships to parenthood to the news of the day. I also write columns on love, life and getting it right for publications including Sunday Life, Daily Life, News.com.au and whimn.com.au and contribute ‘travel with kids’ articles to Kidspot, Holidays With Kids and TheCarousel.com.
But what I love most is hanging with my boys.
As well as being our greatest gifts, our children can also be our greatest teachers, if we let them. Mine have taught me gratitude, patience, how to stay present (because kids have that mastered), how to keep things in perspective, and, most importantly, how to love and be loved.
I started this website for mums like me: who want to make the most of our precious way-too-short time as mothers instead of wishing things were different and willing time away. Who are interested in finding ways to focus on the positives and have a more enriching and fulfilling parenting experience. For our sakes and our children’s sakes. Even when the going gets tough.
I was caught by surprise when I found myself as a mother to two exuberant boys 19 months apart, and having the time of my life. It’s not what I expected at all. I was a woman who was so hesitant about having children that I put it off for as long as I could (getting pregnant for the first time at 39). I wanted to be a mother. I just wasn’t sure I’d be any good at it. I’d decided I would be best to just take a deep breath and get through it.
If I can go from that state of chronic trepidation to where I am now – a place of love and gratitude and connection (on the good days) – then I believe most of us can.
There seems to be an unspoken code around motherhood: that it’s one tough gig, and there’s no scope to suggest otherwise. Many mums have told me they keep quiet about acknowledging their joy for fear of being criticised or silenced.
Being a parent can be overwhelming and a daily struggle just to keep it together. It can also be delightful and rewarding – for all of us – no matter what our circumstances.
I believe that, for many of us, the way we experience parenthood is a choice.
I share my own insights with you here at Mother Zen as to how I’m navigating motherhood, as well as advice and expertise from people who do this for a living. I interview parenting experts, zen-type people, and inspiring mums who pass on their knowledge, insights and wisdom so you get to learn from them, and be inspired by them too.
As well as being informative, the content on Mother Zen is designed to be uplifting, motivating and unifying to help us all access the inherent joy in parenthood, and be more conscious, connected and present with the great, small loves of our lives.
I’m no guru. But I know people who are…
And another thing…
I’m passionate about improving the lives of young women, especially through mentoring. Which is why I’m Patron of SISTER2Sister – a mentoring program for ‘at risk’ teenage girls. I have seen hundreds of girls change the course of their lives through this program as they’re given hope and the possibility of a fulfilling life, often for the first time.
